Haydn's masterful work, "The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross", was commissioned by a Spanish ecclesiastic dignitary. The work was to be played in 1787 for Good Friday in the Santa Cueva church in Cadiz (an unusual church built inside a cave). Haydn himself described his work as a "purely instrumental piece divided into seven Sonatas; it begins with an Introduction, a powerful overture, and ends with a very conclusive Terremoto, or Earthquake..."
